Bailey Constas’ Giant Watercolors Selected for the Southwest Artist Series Purchase Initiative

I’m thrilled to announce that three of my seven foot watercolors inspired by Carlsbad Caverns have been selected for the Southwest Artist Series Purchase Initiative!

This means my art has been selected by jurors and will be included in a portfolio of works available for purchase for the New Mexico Art in Public Places Program.

Over the next two years, my art will be shown to various sites and public buildings throughout New Mexico, in the hopes of purchasing for their site.

My ink linework was originally inspired by tremors—a side effect from prescribed psychiatric drugs. But after visiting Carlsbad Caverns, I understood my ink and watercolor practice was much more than just a side effect. It was an homage to nature’s most powerful sculptors—water and time.

Seeing stalactites and stalagmites formed from millions of years of dropping water, visualizing time in this way was deeply comforting. Experiencing time blindness—a term used to describe the very ADHD phenomenon of losing track of time—my work helps me to grasp this ephemeral concept.

My goal as an artist is to create safe spaces where not only neurodivergent people feel accepted, but all people can feel safe enough to work through their challenges.

I find peace in our environment's constant state of creation and erosion. In a world where worth is often based on your productivity, my art challenges this notion, creating a space for peace, reflection, and thinking about the expanse of time.
